Materials That Age Beautifully

Patina is not damage — it is character. A guide to stone, timber, brass and lime plaster that improve with time rather than wearing out.

Materials That Age Beautifully

There is a quiet luxury in materials that look better in year ten than they did on day one. Choosing them is as much about maintenance as aesthetics.

Stone with movement

Honed marble, Kota and terrazzo develop a soft sheen with use. Seal them properly, avoid aggressive cleaners, and stains become part of the story.

Timber and veneer

Solid wood moves with the seasons. Veneer, used honestly, gives you consistent grain and better stability. Both can be sanded and refinished rather than replaced.

Brass and bronze

Unlacquered brass patinas into a warm, deep tone. If you want it to stay bright, choose a lacquered finish and accept that it will eventually need attention.

Lime plaster

Breathable, repairable and softly imperfect. It hides minor cracks and gives walls a depth that paint cannot match.

The right material palette is the difference between a space that is merely new and one that feels better every year.
